ASLE-UKI supports members at any career stage with small grants towards a range of research events and activities including costs associated with organising seminars, colloquia, conferences, and other community building activities that align with the aims and objectives of ASLE-UKI.

Funds may additionally be available for costs associated with travelling to and accessing archives or participating in essential research activities such as training or networking.

The award takes the form of a grant which is paid directly to the award holder. Applicants may apply for up to £500 to support organisation of events, or £250 to access archives or take part in other activities. The total amount of funding available will not exceed £3000 in any single financial year. Applicants in the Republic of Ireland may apply for the equivalent amount in Euros.

Please note that due to limited funds, support is not available under this scheme to attend conferences. Support to attend conferences organised by ASLE-UKI is offered under a separate bursary scheme. Please see our main funding page for more information.

Deadlines for applications are 1 April and 1 October each year, until further notice.

Regulations

1. Applicants must be members of ASLE-UKI in good standing at the point at which the application is submitted.
2. All applications must be made on the official application form on this page.
3. Applications must be for events and activities that align with the aims and objectives of ASLE-UKI as set out in its constitution and policies. These can be found at https://asle.org.uk/about/
4. The funds requested may be less than, but cannot exceed, £500 to support organisation of events or £250 to access archives or take part in other activities. Applications which ask for larger sums will be disqualified.
5. Applicants in the Republic of Ireland may apply for the equivalent amount in Euros. Please check the current exchange rate at https://www.xe.com/. Please make every effort to ensure your application does not exceed the limits stated above. Applications in Euros that inadvertently exceed the limits due to currency fluctuations will not be disqualified, but the award granted will be capped at the limits stated above.
6. Applications must be submitted before 1 April for events and activities taking place in the following October to March, and before 1 October for events and activities taking place in the following April to September. Applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year but will only be assessed after the relevant submission date has passed.
7. ASLE-UKI will aim to inform applicants of the outcome of their application within two months of the relevant submission date.
8. Applications are welcome from ASLE-UKI members at any career stage, whether or not currently in employment or enrolled as postgraduate students.
9. Priority will be given to applicants who are currently unable to access alternative sources of institutional funding, in particular, early career colleagues, colleagues in precarious employment, or under-represented groups.
10. The assessment panel will be drawn from members of the ASLE-UKI committee but may also include expert external panel members nominated by the committee.
11. Applicants should address any query they have concerning their application to the ASLE-UKI Treasurer (treasurer@asle.org.uk) but may not otherwise contact any ASLE-UKI committee member in relation to their application. Applicants who seek to influence the outcome of their application will be disqualified for the duration of that round of applications.
12. ASLE-UKI committee members are eligible to apply, but will not be eligible to assess applications in any round in which they have an active application, and must declare an interest and recuse themselves from any discussion relating to this scheme while their application is in preparation or under consideration.
13. The award takes the form of a grant which is paid directly to the award holder. Successful applicants will be asked to complete a claim form at the point at which they are informed of the successful outcome of their application. Funds will be transferred by bank transfer only.
14. It is the award holder’s responsibility to determine the taxable status of the award and to pay any tax due. ASLE-UKI cannot offer advice on tax matters.
15. The decision of the assessment panel is final. ASLE-UKI does not provide feedback on its decisions, nor will it enter into any correspondence with applicants concerning applications.
16. Unless otherwise set out in law, ASLE-UKI accepts no liability to applicants for any losses (including expenditure) incurred by them in the process of making an application.
