ASLE-UKI Book Prizes 2027

We are pleased to announce that the competition is now open for the 2027 biennial ASLE-UKI book prizes with a combined prize fund of £1000. There are four categories:

1. Best Academic Monograph in ecocriticism or the environmental humanities (single-authored works only; edited collections are not eligible).
2. Best Work of Creative Writing in Prose Fiction with an ecological or environmental theme.
3. Best Work of Creative Writing in Non-Fiction Prose with an ecological or environmental theme
4. Best Work of Poetry with an ecological or environmental theme.

All nominated books must have been published in 2025 or 2026.

Nominations

Nominations may be made by:

• ASLE-UKI members
• Members of ASLE-UKI’s international affiliates
• Publishers

ASLE-UKI members are welcome to nominate their own books.

Each nominator (or publisher) may submit up to two nominations per category.

Judging and Awards

• An initial longlist will be drawn up from eligible nominations.
• Winners will be announced in Summer / Autumn 2027.
• Each prize carries a cash award of £250.

How to Nominate

Please submit nominations via the online form at the bottom of this page by 30 January 2027.

For a book to be considered, either two hard copies or one hard copy and a PDF copy (or e-book) will need to be supplied to the judging panel. These must be received by the judging panel by 19 February 2027.

Regulations

The prize will be awarded to the monograph or work of creative writing that in the view of the judging panel makes the most significant new contribution to ecocriticism and/or the environmental humanities.

For the critical monograph prize, the judging panel will assess the scholarly quality of the work, its quality as an aptly innovative critical response to the developing ecological crisis, and its contribution to the development of public ecological and environmental awareness and feeling.

For the creative writing prizes, the judging panel will assess the literary quality of the work, its quality as an aptly innovative literary response to the developing ecological crisis, and its contribution to the development of public ecological and environmental awareness and feeling.

If a book is nominated in one category but the judges deem another category more appropriate, the panel reserves the right to transfer the nomination between categories.

The judging panel will be drawn from members of the ASLE-UKI committee but may also include expert readers nominated by the committee.

Edited collections will not be considered.

For books to be considered they must have been published at any point in 2025 and 2026.

Books written by members of the ASLE-UKI committee can be considered (whether self-nominated or nominated by another member), but that committee member will not take any part in the judging process in that year.

Books written by colleagues of committee-members, or by previous or current students of committee-members, may be nominated and considered, but the committee-member should declare the connection. A member making such a declaration need not withdraw from the judging process, but if necessary the panel may be enlarged by the addition of new members.

Nominations can be received from members of ASLE-UKI, from members of its international affiliates, or from publishers. Nominations will be limited to two per category per person.

The decision of the judges is final. ASLE-UKI does not provide feedback on its decisions, nor will it enter into any correspondence with authors or nominators concerning nominations.

Unless otherwise set out in law, ASLE-UKI accepts no liability to authors or nominators for any losses (including expenditure) incurred by them in the process of making a nomination.
